By clearly mapping the "current state" of the operation, value creating and waste processes become apparent. By following the first step through, a "future state" map (effectively a new plan for operations of the business) can be created.

Once then mapping processes are completed, a plan of waste reduction initiatives can be developed and the crucial Value adding process can be developed.
